McCandless Hall
This project involved the expansion and renovation of McCandless Hall, an historically significant structure built in 1912 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building is a central hub for Athens State University, housing Griffin Auditorium as well as offices for Academic Affairs and two museums.
BCA’s scope of work included the construction of approximately 5,400 square feet of new enclosed space, fully integrating all major trades. In addition, we performed extensive renovations to the existing structure, which required significant demolition, upgraded interior finishes, and the installation of new auditorium seating.
Given the building’s historic designation, the project demanded a balance between preservation and modernization. The renovation built upon a previous comprehensive upgrade completed in 2013, which restored original architectural features while introducing modern systems to ensure accessibility and functionality for all users. Particular care was taken to maintain the integrity of key elements, including the auditorium’s historic 1892 tracker-action pipe organ, while delivering a facility capable of supporting concerts, theatrical performances, and lectures for both the university and the broader community.
